Drinks and Snacks Alongside the Creek in Downtown SLO
We’re blessed with a truly charming downtown here in SLO, boasting a beautiful creek that runs alongside a few blocks of Higuera St. There are several great restaurants to choose from for creekside drinks and appetizers. Some of our favorites include Luna Red (with a patio immediately next to the Mission Plaza), Thai Delight, Novo, Sidecar, and Flour House. Or, if you prefer something a little more casual, take the path down to the water and choose your favorite bench or stepping stone to enjoy a picnic-style lunch. If you time it right, you might hear live music in the air or catch the whimsical Secret Garden Tea and Herb shop while they’re open!
Sunset Drive-In: The Best Double-Feature Deal Around
The local Sunset Drive-In shows films year-round and offers double features that you’re not likely to find in average cinemas. During warm weather, you might tailgate with friends, bring camping chairs, and enjoy the film al fresco. Otherwise, collapse your back seats and cuddle up, or sit up front for an old-fashioned date night. The snack bar has classic movie snacks, but many people grab burritos or other finger food from one of our many great casual eateries to enjoy during the films. Don’t miss the original “Let’s All Go to the Lobby” animation at intermission!
Duncan Alley, San Luis Obispo’s Urban Beverage Hotspot

If you’re looking for a one-stop destination to experience the best of San Luis Obispo’s craft beverage scene, Duncan Alley is a must-visit. This vibrant, urban enclave is home to several wineries, a beer garden, a brewery, a cidery, and even a cozy coffee shop, offering something for every palate. With its relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, Duncan Alley is perfect for sampling local flavors, enjoying outdoor seating, and immersing yourself in SLO’s lively community vibe—all just a five-minute drive from downtown.
Slice of Cake + Live Jazz at Madonna Inn’s Silver Bar

While you’ve likely heard of the Central Coast treasure, the Madonna Inn, you might not realize how many great things you can still experience without staying there. On Thursday and Saturday nights from 8-11 pm, they offer live music in their main hall between the Gold Rush Steakhouse and the Silver Bar. The bar seating has the little-known perk of access to both the Copper Cafe and Steakhouse menus, as well as classic cocktails prepared by highly experienced bartenders.
Head over to Madonna after Farmers Market on Thursday evenings for a slice of world-famous cake and a beverage while you enjoy the live music. The whole experience feels like something from a bygone era that can’t be found anywhere else. And if you can’t make it for the live music, you still might find entertainment as the local Salsa and Ballroom dance groups sometimes meet there to practice on weeknights.
The Great American Melodrama
The spirit of vaudeville is alive and well in Oceano, where the Great American Melodrama combines comedy, music, wordplay, parody, slapstick, and summer camp. It’s kind of like a local version of Saturday Night Live in a family-friendly, community theatre context. Enjoy a short comedic play featuring devoted local talent, followed by a variety revue of skits and songs featuring pop culture parodies and puns. The actors run the snack bar during intermission, so make sure you put a dollar or two in their jar – you’ll get your very own song of appreciation. During the holiday season, the annual production of A Christmas Carol is a beloved local tradition. If you’re the kind of person who used to love going to summer camp or perhaps have a sordid past in an improv troupe, you’ll love it.
Brunch at Bon Temps

Bon Temp’s Creole Cafe has been a local standby for the past 30 years, often bringing their soul food comfort and spice to many local events and festivals. Their cozy dining room and patio in our charming Railroad District is a short walk from downtown, with convenient parking. The food will nourish the spirit like nothing else and the staff are friendly and adaptable. A suggestion from a devoted regular: get an order of Pain Perdu (pecan french toast) for the table, and ask for extra seasoning on the grits!
Sensorio Paso

If you love combining the outdoors, entertainment, dinner, and drinks, put on your walking shoes and stroll through this outdoor display, open Thursday-Sunday starting at sunset (days and hours vary by month). Located off Highway 46 outside of Paso Robles, Sensorio Paso is a destination for all age groups and fitness levels. Plan on spending about 1.5 hours walking the paths, or you might hang out longer, listening to live music. The light displays are made up of 100,000 glowing bulbs, and new areas have been added recently. There’s a walk-up bar and a food truck with tasty Mexican food. Expect a permanent restaurant to open soon, too.
Pismo Preserve

If you’re drawn to coastal views, the hiking trails at the Pismo Preserve should be on your list. Easy parking if you arrive early in the day. There are 8 trails ranging in length from 1 to 8 miles. Dress in layers and use the changes in elevation as a good excuse to stop often to take in the views. Need an incentive to hike one of the longer trails? Consider finishing the morning at Old West Cinnamon Rolls Bakery, located in Pismo’s charming downtown. Their rolls are famous and huge.
Cal Poly Architecture Graveyard

This destination is a two-for-one: It gets you on campus at one of California’s most sought-after universities. And it’s a unique, 3-mile round trip hike through the Poly Canyon Trail. The graveyard is so-named because of the relics of experimental structures built over the years by Cal Poly Architecture, Engineering, and Design students. It shows off the school’s “Learn By Doing” motto in a physical way. See if you can picture yourself spending the night inside these funky forms, as the students are assigned to do. The hike up there isn’t difficult. And you might meet some friendly horses on the way up.
Sycamore Hot Springs Outdoor Pools

Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort in SLO is a fabulous local resort and spa, and anyone can enjoy their private outdoor hot spring tubs. Available by hourly reservation, they make for a great opportunity to escape and relax in a transportive setting. Surrounded by oak trees on a secluded hillside near Avila Beach, Sycamore offers natural hot spring tubs of varying sizes that can be enjoyed solo, on an intimate date, or with a group of friends. Bring a picnic and a thermos of your chosen beverage and curate your own slice of luxury. If your schedule allows, the drive back to San Luis Obispo through Prefumo Canyon and the local apple orchards is a gorgeous scenic route with foothills views, especially at Golden Hour.
