Awards
“Deep vivid red. An expansive, complex bouquet evokes fresh red fruit, candied flowers, cola and Moroccan spices. Smoothly blends depth and energy, offering appealingly sweet raspberry, kirsch, spicecake and mocha flavors and a touch of vanilla. Clings with impressive authority on the penetrating finish, which is framed by smooth, well-knit tannins.” - 93 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous
“Lovely aromas of raspberry jam and dark hibiscus syrup are lively and juicy on the nose of this bottling. It’s extremely fresh on the palate, with strawberry-bubblegum flavors that are enhanced with pinches of wild thyme.” - 91 points, Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast
Product notes
An Ode to Our Grenache
"It was like clockwork. As soon as those clumsy June bugs took to the skies, bumbling and stumbling their way through the warm California air as if they had spent the spring drinking themselves silly, my mother would hand me a beat-to-hell wicker basket, send me out the backdoor with enough water to hydrate a horse and a sack lunch; and she'd tell me not to come home until the basket was full. I'd head down the road to this great sweeping cherry tree so damn pretty the cars would stop when they'd pass by and I'd hole myself up in that tree with my wicker basket and I'd start picking. I always came home with a full-basket and my sack lunch untouched, for every third or fourth cherry I'd pluck from that tree would end up in my mouth. My mother would take these cherries, rip off their stems, gouge out their pits and drop them into a vat of boiling water that would soften them. She'd then toss the cherries into a big cheese cloth, tie the cheese cloth taut, and spin it, around and around, until the cherries were so crammed their juices would flood and rain out of the fibers into that same vat, now emptied of its hot churning waters. In the days that followed, my mother's hands would be stained this bright red hue, as if the sun was falling asleep right there in her palms into a blazing, strawberry sunset. This Grenache drinks like that distant summer memory: picking cherries, picking cherries, picking cherries..."
